Yes We Can... Idolize Meaningless Dribble.
- We are a contradiction of a country. We established this ideal society of hardwork and perseverance but it has slowly turned onto non-chalant attitudes mingling with greed. Maybe that is modern society, and maybe that's just the world we live in. I hope not. I assure you, this is not to be a stage for rambling off of lists of how America is tainted or how we should all sell our lands and move to Canada. No, I love this blessed country. This has been the birthplace of democracy, and for generations, the national platform for hope and dreams. We established a notion that America is where you make it and anyone can rise to the top, yet we keep hush on the how easy it is to fall. For that, I blame reality television.
Take "Survivor." This somewhat of a gameshow revolves around a group of men and women who are exiled to an underdeveloped land to "roughneck" it on the bare essentials, while battling for dominance through gossip and idiotic backyard games. The real perplexing part is that the winner is awarded a million dollars for a few months in the wilderness surrounded by camera crews and medical staff. Now, I'm not one to say that I'd easily be able to do that sort of thing, but if it came down to it, it's not as hard as neurosurgery. Realize this: With the exception of most Western developed, first world countries, most of the world's population lives this lifestyle, and not as a whimsical game with a hefty cash award. In areas such as Darfur or Somalia, the scrounge for food while they defend off rebel forces who rape their women and children. I'd like to see American's take place in that reality game show.
And what about the ones who don't win? What do they do now, without their millions? Do they go back to their meaningless jobs of ten dollars and hour and wallow in their own self pity? Hate to tell you this America but life's not that bad. We idolize the quick buck, that is what our American dream is these days. The essential belief of hardwork has flown the coop, as we look at "Survivor" and even more dumbfounding reality personalites such as Paris and any Kardashian. The American Dream was founded by this country with the intent of nine to five and determination. But hey, we can leave such borish things to the illegal aliens we so hastily try to cast out.
